|FOA Creates Largest Online Fiber Optic Reference
The FOA is creating a new online reference site for fiber optics that will be the most comprehensive collection of information on fiber optics available anywhere. This unique reference site was created as a complement to traditional textbooks since it can be kept up to date more easily, can be accessed anywhere and is much less expensive than printed books. The new FOA site was created as a reference site for schools and students studying for FOA certifications and as a readily available reference for FOA-certified technicians needing a refresher course or to find information they need "right now" while on the job.
The site is comprised of basic reference materials in conventional web pages, topical tutorials in slide-show format and reference documents formatted for easy printing. For example, from the site you can read about fiber optic termination, watch a slide show tutorial on termination and see a “virtual hands-on” step-by-step lesson on how to actually perform the termination (5 types, no less!) Typical hands-on processes like cable preparation, termination, splicing and testing are covered in great detail.
Recognizing the growing use of portable web-enabled devices like the iPhone and other smart phones, the site is formatted simply so most of the pages can be viewed easily on a small-screen web device (like the iPhone above) as well as a larger computer screen. Access by portable web devices means the site can be accessed from the job site by techs needing some information or advice.
The FOA Online Fiber Optic Reference Guide is now available for use. It's not complete - we expect it to never be "complete" but always expanding! However, we do have a complete basic guide to fiber optics plus a CFOT study guide and instructor's guide already available. We want you to start using it now and give us feedback on how we can make it better!
Go to The FOA Online Fiber Optic Reference Guide.
They've always been called that - the field tests of state of the art systems. The latest: 100 Gb/s over 1000 km by Verizon and Alcatel. Read about it in Lightwave.
As we read the various media, we find lots of new and intersting applications for fiber optics, but perhaps this month's are the most unusual!
A Fiber Optic Option You Need In Your Next Car!
If you next car is this Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé, that is. Fiber has nothing to do with the car's mechanicals, which include a 6.75-liter V12 with 453-HP and 530 lb-ft to pull its 5,798 pounds. Inside, the car has Smoke Grey leather piped with navy accents, Rosewood veneers, and metallic trim accenting the top of the instrument panel and the thin-rimmed steering wheel. But the pièce de résistance is the "starlight headliner", which uses hundreds of fiber-optic lights to create a virtual starfield above the backseat passengers.
Oh, yes, the price is not disclosed by the factory. I guess if you have to ask what it costs, you can't afford it!
Fiber Optics Helps Take Underwater Photos
Another interesting use of fiber optics has been introduced by Olympus cameras. They are offering a new underwater housing for Olympus E520 DSLR cameras that uses fiber optics to connect to separate underwater flash units. Since any underwater housing needs to be sealed, connections to outside devices can be tricky, especially for electrical connections in sea water. Using fiber simplifies the connection as has been known for years in submarines and remote-piloted vehicles, as we reported in FOA Newsletter earlier this year.
And Finally, They Should Have Used Fiber!
The Red Bull Formula 1 racing team had a gearbox failure at the new Singapore race when electrical interference caused on the their cars gearboxes to try to select 2 gears at once, with disastrous consequences! http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-qa-with-christian-horner/
Fiber has been used for engine management systems in racecars, but not as far as we know for control systems in F1. Maybe soon!
Good Question! Tech Questions Worth Repeating
Q: I would be grateful if you could inform me what may approximately be
the laying, labor and maintenance costs (not cable costs) for an 1 km
long optical link for a standard outdoor application (one duplex
multimode fiber cable) compared to Ethernet cable laying costs.
A: I'd suggest beginning by reading this FOA Tech Topic on estimating: http://www.thefoa.org/tech/estimate.htm.
Based on this technique and the information in our book, The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual, we have approximately the following labor hours:
Pulling cable in conduit and terminating ends: 40-50 hours - about $1500-2000 in US labor costs.
If no conduit is available, you can direct bury the cable, requiring digging a trench and installing direct burial cable or fiber optic innerduct (available with cable installed). Trenching probably doubles the hours involved.
Aerial cable cable can also be run if poles already exist.
Remember to use "dry water-blocked" cable instead of gel-filled cable, as it will simplify termination. It's similar in price.
I would not install 2 fibers anyway, as installing 12-16 fibers will add minimal cost and allow future applications.
Maintenance costs are nil - in fact fiber requires no maintenance - inspecting it can lead to damage!
Installing copper cable will be no cheaper. In fact, compared to copper, the fiber will be much cheaper. In order to run Ethernet over copper for 1 km, you will either need sophisticated electronics (ADSL to get even 10 Mb/s) or use several repeaters which will require installing power - uninterruptible power- for the repeaters which will then be sources of potential failure.
Q: I may have to test some fiber on the reel. Multimode at both wavelengths. Each fiber must be tested. Is there a recommendation to accomplish this without having to terminate each fiber and then cut the connectors off prior to installation and then after installation reterminate and test again?
A: Use a mechanical splice like the Siemon Ultrasplice that can be reused on the source end and a bare fiber adapter (BFA) on the meter end. Use a pigtail on the source and calibrate the 0dB reference with the BFA on the meter. For dual wavelength, use a coupler and cal each source separately. See below.
Every two or three fibers, add some index matching gel to the end of the fiber before inserting in the Ultrasplice to replace the factory-added get.

Greece to Invest in Its Fiber Network
To catch up to other European countries The government of Greece plans to invest in a new fiber optic network that will drastically upgrade its broadband and cable television capabilities, TeleComWave.com reported. In a statement to reporters, Communications Minister Costis Hadzidakis was cited as saying that, "Greece has decided to make a strategic leap. From where it is now, rather than adopt the intermediate technologies of today, we have decided to adopt future technologies that are already available". The plan calls for a seven-year, US$3 billion program to build a national fiber-optic network connecting some two million households around the country, the report said. The goal, the release said, was for the country to tender three separate concessions to private companies to build and operate fiber-optic networks with speeds of at least 100 megabytes per second (Mbps) in three separate regions of the country. The report said that Greece has been slow to transition to fiber optics, with only 0.1% Internet penetration as of four years ago. Since then, however, the country "has been quickly catching up with fellow European Union member states" in opening its telecom market and promoting use of broadband Internet, it said, noting that the usage figure is now 12%. "We have decided to invest as a country in a modern fiber optic network that will change the daily life of Greek citizens," Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis was quoted as saying in the report.
New Pemises Cabling Certification

Design certification training is starting at FOA-approved schools.
Lennie On OTDRs: For a dozen years now, Lennie Lightwave's Guide To Fiber Optics has been the most popular website for those getting started in fiber optics or wanting to look up some basic information. Now Lennie has added a new "virtual hands-on" tutorial on using OTDRs, based on the VDV Works OTDR simulator. Not only will it help you understand how to use an OTDR properly (not just turn it on and hit autotest, which may be your downfall!) but you can download a demo of the OTDR Simulator to try it yourself.

New Tech Bulletin On Fiber Optic Installation
The FOA has always used the NECA/FOA-301 standard Installing And Testing Fiber Optic Cables as its reference guide for CFOT certification and of course a reference for installers in the field. Requests for a similar reference document online led to the creation of an FOA Tech Bulletin on Installing Fiber Optic Cable Plants. It's a small PDF file so it's quick to download and print. We think you'll find this one most useful. Download It Now.
Remove The Copper and Replace With It Fiber?
Not removing the cable, but just the conductors and leaving the jacket as duct for fiber? Sound far-fetched? See how Kable-X says you can do it. http://kabel-xusa.net/howitworks.html

FTTH "Take Rates" Now at 30%
About 1/3 of all subscribers offered FTTH are not taking it according to RVA quoted in Telephony Online. In underserved areas, it's over 50%. Partly it's because FTTH is developing the reputation as the best service but partly the take rate is up because the companies are able to hook up subscribers faster.
Verizon Strikes Deal to Bring Fios Service to the District of Columbia: Washington Post, 8/8/08
Verizon ramping up FiOS build out
By Mike Robuck, CedMagazine.com - June 11, 2008
Despite the sluggish economy, Verizon isn‚t backing off of the gas pedal when it comes to building out its fiber optic FiOS network.
Verizon plans on having FiOS in more than its previously stated goal of 18 million homes by the end of 2010, according to Reuters. Verizon President and COO Denny Strigl said that the company would continue to expand its FiOS network to the tune of more than $20 billion, while doing so at a faster rate than the original plan called for.
Verizon‚s FiOS rollout was initially slower than expected due to a lack of equipment, such as set-top boxes, as well as the regulatory approval process in the states where the telco wanted to rollout the triple-play service.
From the Philly.com web journal.
The old story (not a joke!) about the most likely fiber optic communications system failure being caused by "backhoe fade" reminds us that digging safely is vitally important. The risk is not just interrupting communications, but the life-threatening risk of digging up high voltage or gas lines.
There is a website called "Common Ground Alliance" that focuses directly on this issue. Here is how they describe themselves:
Of special interest is their "Best Practices" Manual, available for downloading. If you do OSP installs, please get yourself a copy and read it.
